A Stork Love Story
Hi friends! This is a remarkable story about two white storks separated by thousands of kilometers.
Meet Klepetan and Malena, a stork pair whose story has touched people around the world.

Born to Be Together: White Stork Romance

White storks remain in lifelong monogamous mating pairs from the age of three or four. That's right, while the rest of us are swiping left and right trying to find "the one," these elegant birds have already figured it all out by their third birthday. In spring, males return to breeding grounds, arriving a few days before females, and immediately busy themselves enlarging the nest used the previous year. Think of it like a husband redecorating the house before his wife comes home from a long trip. Adorable, right?
Courtship among white storks is both dramatic and endearing. Each spring, returning adults reunite at nesting sites, often with the same partner from previous years. Their greeting ceremonies involve mutual bill-clattering, synchronized head movements, and ritualized displays that reinforce pair bonds. It's basically their version of a passionate airport reunion scene, just with more beak-clacking and fewer airport delays.

The Love Story That Broke the Internet

No storks have captured hearts quite like Klepetan and Malena, a pair whose extraordinary love story spanned over two decades. The story began in the small Croatian village of Brodski Varoš, where Malena, a female stork, was injured and left unable to fly. She was rescued by a kindhearted school janitor, Stjepan Vokić, who built a nest for her on his property and took care of her through the winters when other storks migrated south.
In 2001, Malena met Klepetan, a male stork who became her lifelong mate. What makes their story remarkable is that every year, despite the vast distance and challenges of migration, Klepetan would return to Malena each spring, marking the start of another breeding season. The guy flew the equivalent of crossing an ocean and a half, every single year, just to get back to his lady. No excuses. No "I forgot." No "traffic was bad." Just pure, unwavering dedication.

The Ultimate Long-Distance Relationship

Through a radio tracking band, it was determined that Klepetan made a 13,000-kilometre, month-long journey from South Africa to Croatia to meet up with Malena. For context, that's like flying from New York to Tokyo and then some, every single year. When Klepetan arrived, they immediately started to cuddle, arranged a nest together, and would go on to lay eggs. The pair ended up raising 66 chicks in total. A power couple by any standard!
During wintertime, when storks had flown south, Malena stayed in a heated garage where Vokić built her a nest. Since Malena could not hunt, Vokić fed her every day, not only in winter but throughout the year. "I have to drive 30 km to the nearby river where I fish. She can eat almost a full bucket of fish a day," he said. So yes, this man drove 30 km daily to catch fish for a stork. If that's not love, we don't know what is.

Loyalty That Defies Logic

The white stork's reputation for lifelong monogamy is only partially accurate. While many pairs do reunite annually, storks are best described as seasonally monogamous, typically remaining faithful for the duration of the breeding season but potentially changing partners if one fails to return from migration. Yet Klepetan never wavered. Not once. Although white storks usually don't pair for life, Klepetan remained faithful, and every time he came back from the south, he came back to Malena.
White storks are among the most beloved birds in Europe, symbolizing luck, fidelity, and renewal. Every spring, these elegant creatures migrate from Africa to their nesting grounds across Europe. In some cultures the presence of white stork nests is seen as a sign of good luck, while in other cultures its arrival once heralded the arrival of a new baby.

A Farewell Fit for Legends

Sadly, Malena died of old age in 2021. At the time of her death, she was not alone, as Klepetan was with her until the very end. There wasn't a dry eye in the whole of Croatia. Klepetan, now about 36 years old, still visits Malena's grave that sits under an apple tree in Stjepan Vokić's garden. This has been deemed very unusual for animal behavior, but that is just another showcase of the extraordinary nature of white storks.
Klepetan and Malena are living proof that love is not just a human thing. It flies, it migrates, it endures storms and oceans, and it still shows up every spring without fail. Next time someone tells you love is complicated, tell them about the stork who flew 13,000 kilometers just to be next to his partner. Sometimes the animal kingdom teaches us more about the heart than we ever expected. So here's to Klepetan, the most devoted frequent flyer in the history of romance!
